It is important to have discussions with your child about the books that he or she is reading. This will show your child that you care about their reading as well as show them how important it is. It can be difficult to have a discussion with your child about a book if you have not read it. Here are some questions you or discuss with your child even if you have not read the book.
These questions will also give you an idea about what values are being discussed in the book.
- Who is your favorite character and why?
- Who is your least favorite character and why?
- What is one lesson that you learned from the story?
These questions can help with the reading comprehension.
- What is your favorite part of the book and why?
- Were you happy with the ending of the book and why?
- What was the climax (turning point) of the book?
- Describe one instance of imagery in the book.
- What are three events that led up to the climax (turning point) of the book?
These questions will work on critical thinking.
- If you could change the ending of the book, how would you change it?
- If you changed the protagonist (main good character) and antagonist (main bad character), how would it change the book?
- If you could be friends with only one character in the book who would it be and why?
