School is out. The backpacks are in the closet. The homework folders are (hopefully) recycled. Summer has arrived.

For many families, the last day of school comes with a collective exhale — and then, almost immediately, a question: now what?

Summer is a genuine gift of time. But time, as any parent knows, doesn’t organize itself. Without some intention behind it, ten weeks can slip by in a haze of screens and late mornings and the creeping realization in August that September is closer than you thought.

At Margot Tutoring Inc, we believe summer should be restorative, enjoyable, and at least a little intentional. Here’s how to make the most of it for every learner in your family, without turning the season into another school year.

First: Let Them Rest (for Real)
We mean this. The first week or two of summer should look like summer. Sleep in. Stay up a little later. Do things that have nothing to do with learning. Let the decompression happen.

Students who come out of a school year, especially one that included high-stakes exams, need genuine recovery time before they’re ready to engage with structured learning again. Forcing academics too quickly leads to resistance, resentment, and very little actual learning.

Give it a week. Maybe two. Then ease in.

Summer Tutoring: Who Needs It and Why

Summer tutoring isn’t only for students who struggled during the school year. It’s a tool thatserves a wide range of students in different ways.

Students who need to recover ground — whether they passed a Regents exam with a lower score than hoped, struggled in a particular subject, or had a difficult year for any reason, benefit enormously from the focused, low-pressure environment of summer tutoring. Without the daily demands of school, there is room to actually understand material rather than simply survive it.

Students who want to get ahead — rising juniors preparing for AP courses, students planning to take on more challenging schedules in the fall, or students who want to strengthen their foundation before a new year begins, use summer to build confidence and competency before the pressure is on.

Elementary students maintaining skills — as we discussed in last week’s post, summer learning loss is real. A consistent, light-touch tutoring schedule through the summer keeps reading and math skills sharp and prevents the September regression that sets students back before the year even begins.

At Margot Tutoring, our certified teachers are available throughout the summer for one-on-one sessions tailored to each student’s individual needs. Flexible scheduling means tutoring can fit around vacations, camps, and everything else summer brings.

Academic Coaching for the Bigger Picture
If your child’s challenges this year were less about content knowledge and more aboutorganization, time management, focus, or study skills, academic coaching may be exactly whatthey need this summer.

Our academic coaching program teaches students the skills that make all learning more effective: how to organize their materials, how to manage their time, how to concentrate, how to take notes, and how to study in ways that actually work. These are skills that transfer across every subject and every grade level, and summer is the ideal time to build them, without the daily pressure of school making it hard to practice.

Many students who struggle academically are not lacking in intelligence or effort. They’re lacking a system. Academic coaching builds the system.

Homeschooling Support Through the Summer

For families who homeschool, or who are considering it, Margot Tutoring offers homeschooling support services that can extend into the summer months. Our certified teachers can help design curriculum, teach specific subjects, and ensure that your child is progressing in alignment with grade-level standards.

If homeschooling is something you’ve been thinking about for the coming school year, summeris a great time to explore what that might look like with professional guidance.

Brain-Compatible Learning Workshops

We offer free two-hour brain-compatible learning workshops for parents and students. If you’ve been curious about how your child’s brain actually learns and what strategies work with that biology rather than against it,  this is a wonderful opportunity. Reach out to learn about upcoming workshop dates.

Planning a Summer That Works for Your Family

Every family’s summer looks different. Some families travel extensively; others stay home. Some students are in camps or programs; others have wide-open schedules. Whatever your summer looks like, the planning principle is the same: decide in advance how learning will have a place in it, and then design around your actual life.

For most students, we recommend something like this:
Elementary students: 2–3 sessions of tutoring or structured learning per week, plus daily independent reading.
Middle school students: 2–3 sessions per week focused on areas of weakness or upcoming coursework, plus some enrichment in areas of interest.
High school students: structured support based on their individual situation, whether recovering from a difficult year, preparing for fall AP® courses, or retaking a Regents exam.

None of this needs to take over the summer. It just needs to be consistent.

One Last Thing

To every student who made it through this school year: you did it. To every parent who supported, encouraged, coordinated, and showed up, you did it too.
Summer is your reward. Enjoy it fully.

And when September feels close, we’ll be here, ready to help your child take the next step forward.

Have a wonderful summer from all of us at Margot Tutoring Inc.
