Parents sometimes use the words tutoring and academic coaching interchangeably. It is an understandable confusion, because both involve a knowledgeable adult supporting a student’s academic progress. But the two approaches are meaningfully different, and understanding the distinction can help families get exactly the right kind of help for exactly the right problem.

At Margot Tutoring Inc, we offer both, because we have learned over years of working with students that some problems require content knowledge, some require skill-building, and many require both at the same time.

What Tutoring Does
Tutoring is subject-specific. It focuses on the content of a particular course: the concepts, the skills, and the knowledge a student needs to understand and perform well in a specific subject.

A student who is struggling in Algebra II because they do not understand how to factor polynomials needs a tutor who knows algebra, can identify exactly where the confusion begins, and can explain the concept in a way that finally clicks. A student who is working toward a high score on the Regents exam in Living Environment needs targeted, knowledgeable support in that specific subject.

Tutoring answers the question: what does my child need to understand in this subject?

What Academic Coaching Does
Academic coaching is not subject-specific. It focuses on the skills and systems that support learning across all subjects: organization, time management, study habits, note-taking, planning, self-advocacy, and the ability to manage the demands of a full academic schedule without falling apart.

A student who consistently loses papers, forgets to turn in assignments, cannot manage their time across multiple subjects, or struggles to retain information even when they understand it in the moment does not primarily need more content instruction. They need a system. They need to be taught explicitly how to organize their materials, how to plan their week, how to study in a way that produces durable learning rather than short-term familiarity.

Academic coaching answers the question: how does my child need to approach learning in general?

Why So Many Students Need Both
The students who struggle most academically are often dealing with two overlapping problems at the same time. There is a content gap in one or more subjects, and there is a skill gap in the strategies and systems that make academic success possible.

Addressing only the content gap through tutoring alone helps in the short term but often leaves the underlying problem in place. A student who finally understands quadratic equations but still does not have a system for managing homework, studying for tests, or asking for help when they are confused will continue to struggle, just in different places.

Addressing only the skill gap through coaching alone gives a student better tools but does not close the specific knowledge gaps that are pulling their grades down right now.

The most effective academic support, especially at the start of a new school year, addresses both. It builds content understanding in the subjects where it is missing and builds the underlying habits and systems that allow a student to sustain and build on that understanding independently.

How to Know What Your Child Needs
Here is a simple starting point. If your child understands the material when it is explained but keeps falling behind through missed deadlines, lost work, poor test preparation, or an inability to manage their time across subjects, they need academic coaching at least as much as they need tutoring.

If your child works hard, stays organized, and genuinely tries but simply does not understand the content in a specific subject despite their effort, they need targeted tutoring in that subject.

If your child is behind in both ways, which is more common than most parents realize, they need both.

If you are not sure, a free consultation with one of our academic coaches is a good place to start. We will help you figure out exactly what kind of support will make the most difference for your child this year.
