One of the biggest challenges that parents face during the summer is the “summer slide” – a regression in academic progress during the summer months when children are out of school. Without daily reading, practice, and stimulation, children may lose up to 30% of their in-school learning by the time they go back to school in the fall. This can make it difficult for them to catch up and can put them at a disadvantage compared to their peers. In this post, we will discuss the importance of avoiding the summer slide and offer tips for summer tutoring, reading, and other educational activities.
1. Summer Tutoring
Summer tutoring is a great way to combat the “summer slide”. A summer tutor can help your child stay on track with their skills and provide additional support in any areas where they might be struggling. This can be particularly helpful for students who have Learning Disabilities or ADHD. Summer tutoring can help review concepts that a student was struggling with or it can provide enrichment and prepare a student for the next grade.
2. Reading
Reading is one of the best ways to prevent the summer slide. Encourage your child to read for at least 20-30 minutes every day. Make sure they have access to books that interest them, or that are appropriate for their reading level. Take them to the library or bookstore to choose books and participate in the summer reading programs. You might also set up a book club or reading challenge with family and friends to encourage a little friendly competition and motivation.
3. STEM Activities
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities are a great way to keep your child’s brain engaged during the summer and actively prevent the summer slide. Look for free events or exhibits at local science centers, museums, and planetariums. Or, try some fun science experiments at home. Check online science experiment resources such as Mystery Science or try some of these activities suggested by NASA.
4. Limit Screen Time
Limiting screen time and tech use can be challenging, particularly for kids who are used to having access to computers, tablets, and phones throughout the school year. While these devices can provide endless streams of entertainment, they can also take away from valuable reading and learning time. Encourage your child to spend more of their free time engaging in physical activities and socializing with friends and family.
5. Schedule Regular Study Time
During the school year, children have structured schedules with assigned classes, homework, and projects. It’s important to encourage the same structure during the summer months to keep them engaged and prevent the summer slide. Schedule time each day to work on academic review. Summer school or enrichment classes may also be a great way to provide a stable schedule.
